Situated just a short 25 minute drive north east of Hobart is the historic township of Richmond. The town is as elegant today as is was when it was first founded in the 1820's, with plenty of open spaces for a relaxing family picnic and numerous historic buildings depicting Tasmania's convict heritage. Many of these historic stone buildings now house art galleries, quaint teashops, craft boutiques and museums filled with fascinating historical artifacts.
Richmond was originally a convict station and key military post located between Hobart and the Port Arthur penal settlement, and consequently it now boasts the oldest bridge in Australia. Nowadays there is plenty of things to see and place to visit in Richmond including the famous lollie shop, the Richmond maze, the historic jail and old Hobart Town model village which accurately depicts colonial life in Hobart. During your stay in the historic Richmond township you can purchase unique souvenirs or partake in all manner of dining ranging from afternoon Devonshire teas through to fine restaurant dining serving a selection of fresh Tasmanian produce.
