One of Tasmania's most well known tourist destinations is Port Arthur, which is ideally situated on the Tasman Peninsula just a leisurely hours drive south east of Hobart. It is a place that is steeped in history due to the fact that from 1833 to 1877 it was the site of a penal convict settlement that housed some of the most hardened criminals that Britain sent out to Australia. Evidence of the harsh existence that these convicts endured can be experienced by taking a tour of the Port Arthur Historical Site, or for the more adventurous a night-time ghost tour of the supposedly haunted ruins.
Nowadays Port Arthur is a tranquil and relaxing place to spend a holiday with friendly locals, world class echo tours and over 35 bush walks that will take you all over the Tasman National Park. Within the national park you can also explore the amazing natural rock formations like the Blowhole, Tasmans Arch, Remarkable Cave, Devils Kitchen and Clyde Island, or alternatively you can experience the beautiful surroundings on horse back. Some of the other popular activities to do whilst on holidays in Port Arthur includes fishing charters, surfing, having family fun on the pristine beaches, rock climbing, abseiling, playing a round of golf, surfing or simply watching the beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the water.
Despite it sparse popular Port Arthur still has plenty of fine dining restaurants serving locally caught seafood, boutique shops and interesting attractions like the Federation Chocolate Factory and the Tasmanian Devil Park in Taranna. So if you are after a place to get away from the madness of everyday city life then a holiday in Port Arthur is ideal. Here you will be able to relax and unwind, whilst exploring the natural surroundings, doing a spot of fishing or listening to the waves caress the sandy beaches.
